World Bee Day 2024

Bees pollinate 75% of the world's crops and 1/3 of the food we eat; they even have their own holiday, International Bee Day, which falls on May 20, 2024. Because they are not aggressive, honey bees and bee swarms are usually not a bother and won't hurt anyone, but sometimes you might need professional help to move them to a place that's safe for them and anyone who might be allergic to bee stings.

The Reason Behind World Bee Day

World Bee Day is observed on May 20th, globally, every year. Raising awareness of the value of pollinators in the ecosystem, such as bees and other insects, is the aim of World Bee Day. The significance of International Bee Day stems from the fact that bees are under threat worldwide, but especially in Europe, where diseases, habitat loss, climate change, and toxic pesticides are threatening almost one in ten wild bee species.

Various Bee Types

There are about 250 species of bees in the UK, 24 of which are bumblebees. The most common bee species in the UK are common carder bees, honey bees, bumblebees, mining bees, and mason bees.

All bee species are either solitary or social, meaning they either live in a colony or alone. Solitary bees do not swarm; social bees do. Bee swarms can be produced by honey bees due to overcrowding and a natural need for colony division, which usually takes place in the spring. The bee swarm temporarily moves to a new location when scout bees look for a new nesting site.

When Problems with Bee Swarms Occur

Professional bee pest control or bee removal may be required because bees can be dangerous to people who have a severe sting allergy (anaphylactic shock) when scout bees are looking for a new home. Bees usually build their hives in trees, shrubs, and abandoned buildings. However, if bees swarm and build a hive inside a building, they can produce kilogrammes of honey and comb if left unchecked; it's not uncommon to remove over 40 kg of honey from buildings! Property damage from honey and comb filling cavities and chimneys may require professional bee removal or expert bee pest management.

Taking Care Of And Preserving Bees

AJ Pest Control takes great care when handling bee swarms and bee eradication. In the UK, bees are not legally protected, despite the fact that there are regulatory limitations and specific procedures to adhere to when handling bees and removing swarms. Before beginning any treatment for bee pest control, bee swarm removal, or bee removal, AJ Pest Control carefully considers all of the options and works closely with knowledgeable bee keepers.
