World Bee Day 2022

Bees are extremely important pollinators who are responsible for 75% of the world's crops and a third of the food we eat, they even have their own day: 20th May is World Bee Day. Honey Bees and bee swarms are not usually a pest and will not do any harm as they aren't aggressive, but sometimes you may need help from a professional to move them to somewhere safe for both them and anyone potentially allergic to bees.

What Is World Bee Day?

World Bee Day is celebrated internationally on 20th May each year. The aim of World Bee Day is to raise attention of the role of bees and other pollinators in the environment. World Bee Day is important because all around the world bees are facing threats, including habitat loss, climate change, toxic pesticides and disease all around the world which makes World Bee Day so important - almost 1 in 10 of Europe’s wild bee species are facing extinction.

Types of Bees

There are over 250 species of bee in the UK and 24 of the UK species are Bumblebees. The most common types of bees in the UK are:

  • Honey bees
  • Bumblebees
  • Mining bees
  • Mason bees
  • Common carder bees

Bee species are either solitary or social, this means they either live on their own or in a group called a colony. Solitary bees do not swarm but social bees do. Honey bees can create bee swarms due to overcrowding and the natural need for division of the colony which normally happens in the spring time. The swam of bees temporarily moves to a new location while scout bees look for a new nesting site.

Bee Swarms Can Become a Problem

Bees can be a health risk to people with severe sting allergy (anaphylactic shock) and bee pest control or bee removal may be required from a professional while scout bees are looking for their new location. Bees will normally set up their hives in shrubs, tree cavities and abandoned buildings. However, if bees swarm, then set up a hive in a building, when left undisturbed it can produce kilos of honey and comb - it's not unheard of to remove over 40kg from buildings! The comb and honey fills voids and chimneys which can lead to damage to properties, which is when professional bee pest control or professional bee removal is required.

Treatment & Protection Bees

AJ Pest Control are very careful when it comes to dealing with bee swarms and bee removal. Bees are not protected by law in the UK, but there are legal requirements and strict procedures to follow when treating bees and during bee swarm removal. AJ Pest Control work very closely with professional bee keepers and consider all options before any treatment is carried out for any bee pest control, bee swarm removal or bee removal. Contact us or give us a call on 01799 542 505 and we'll be happy to advise and discuss your needs.
